NORF Tutorial


Performing a Search

1. Go to the SWBIC NORF page.  

2. Paste the following sequence into the sequence entry window and click on the submit button.

Interpreting Results

1. NORF will return translated amino acid sequences for each orf over 100 amino acids in length found in the submited sequence.  Many functional proteins do not have lengths under 100 aa.  However, when doing research, orfs under 100aa's should be analyzed especially if a coding region is expected in the DNA sequence but is not found with greater than 300 nucleotides.

2. The reading frames are labelled +1, +2, +3, -1, -2, and -3.  These represent the reading frames found starting with the first, second and third nucleotides in the forward and reverse (compliment) sequences.

3. When NORF returns the orf amino acid sequences,  a "submit to notebook" button is provided.  Click this button and the orf sequences will be recorded in the game notebook where they can be accessed for copy and past into analysis tools.

4. The example sequence submitted for this tutorial returns two orf amino acid sequences over 100 amino acids in length.  One is in the +2 open reading frame, and the other is in -3.
